The Yachting center is rich with history. In 1875, it served as a house of refuge to survivors of shipwrecks. The Coast Guard took over during Prohibition as a base to chase out rum runners attempting to smuggle illegal whiskey from the Bahamas. In 1949 the Bahia Mar Yachting Center was completed allowing slips for 400 vessels making it the largest marina in the world. From the 1960’s through the 1980’s amenities were added from 15 story 185 room north tower to the 4 lighted tennis courts. In 1987, the Bahia Mar Marina dedicated a Literary Landmark in honor of “Busted Flush, the home of Travis McGee, a fictional hero created by mystery author Jon D. Lauderdale Marina is the oldest single-owned marina business in south Florida. In 1948, the marina was known as abandoned site for submarine torpedoes used in World War II. Robert Cox, the founder of Lauderdale Marina, arrived in '46 only to find that the water wasn't deep enough to dock his 9' boat, the only dockage being near the bridge off Los Olas. Realizing the need and envisioning homes that may someday line the coast, Cox negotiated with land owners to purchase the land and use it as a fueling station. The fueling station eventually turned into a Marina and today holds Master Dealer Certification for famous boats like the Boston Whaler. The business is run by the Cox family (3rd Generation), John Clark President & grandson Scott Clark, GM. The following is a brief idea of the services:
